For Good Health

For good healthEnvironmental health science is a profession that covers many scientific disciplines and principles for good health and well-being.

People who occupy this profession take time to learn about our lives and our environments.

They explore for the cause of diseases, in addition to chemical, biological, and physical factors that affect the health of groups of people.

Around the globe, organizations, individuals, and governments give support to environmental health science professionals in order that they may educate and inspire people to take action to protect, sustain, and preserve our complex ecosystems and rich biodiversity.

For Good Health

Healthy People is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that offers assistance to individuals and families in environmental health issues within the United States.

However, the principles and advice they offer can be used by people around the world for good health!

Healthy People is actively improving health and lifestyles by encouraging everyone to exhibit healthy habits and participate in community events and programs. Their ten-year goal is explained in the Healthy People 2020 website.  This site suggests incentive programs and advice relating to health issues currently facing Americans.

One of their most recent programs is focused on communicating and making possible a course of action for improved health.  They provide their findings and explain the leading indicators of the main health concerns and issues that burden the majority of the nation’s population.

Environmental Health and Quality

One of the most pressing concerns for public health professionals is the poor environmental quality in the United States.

All living organisms require to live in environments suitable and sustainable to their existence.  Humans, plants, and wildlife are no exception.  Healthy People points out that the air quality in many U.S. cities is far too dangerous and unsafe for healthy livelihoods.

Millions of people contract diseases, illnesses, and death due to poor air quality; illnesses in the form of cancer, asthma, and cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, more than 127 million people in the U.S. are exposed to air quality that exceeds the Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for safe air quality.

Obviously, quality air is essential to sustain human life.  Unfortunately, poor air quality contributes to ailments, diseases, and morbidity. For instance, second-hand smoke and air pollution is linked to 1 in ten children contracting asthma; and 1 in twelve adults share in the same health outcome.

Poor environmental quality concerns are related to other factors and determinants, as well.

Many manufactured goods contain toxic materials and are linked to causing birth defects, respiratory diseases, developmental disorders, lead poisoning, and infectious diseases.

Many manufactured goods that contain toxic material are in products such as cleaning products, home décor, clothing, pesticides and food products, to name a few.

Maintain Healthy Habits

In order for us to maintain healthy habits for good health and improve our lifestyle, we need support, education, and motivation.

By increasing water and air quality within our communities and using safe materials in manufactured goods and consumables we can reduce the risks of getting preventable diseases.

Great Article George! The first thing I thought about was how the pollution in the air caused so many of my friends to have asthma. When I drive through my old neighborhood I can smell the difference in air quality and I’m not surprised by the growing number of those born with breathing problems who come from urban backgrounds and then later develop allergies as an adult. Thanks for sharing valuable information.

    • Thank you Lynn!

I’m sorry to hear of so many of your friends getting asthma.

A lot of work needs to be done in order that we find better alternatives to breathing polluted air. The same applies to contaminated water…
